Pattern testing, Aurifil Block-of-the-Month, and QuiltCon!

Posted on

Hi everyone!

Hope you are having  fabulous week!

It is true – I’m leaving shortly for QuiltCon in Savannah and hope to meet some of you I haven’t met before there!  Please stop by the BERNINA booth (#201-205), hosted by the Augusta Sewing Center, and say “hi”.  I’ll be demoing the BERNINA Q24 and Q20 on Friday and Saturday – so excited!

For those of you that might have missed it, the second month of Aurifil’s Block-of-the-Month pattern is now on their blog.  I had such fun piecing “Dutch Treat” by Maureen Cracknell.

“Dutch Treat” in Nordic Holiday for Contempo. (Shipping in April!)

I’ve been doing a ton of teaching lately, but I did finally find time to sew and proof the remaining Nordic Holiday patterns.  (I post most of my open teaching events over in my Facebook group, along with quilting tutorials, etc. so please join if you haven’t already.) They are off to the printer today so should ship in about a week!

The current state of my floor… and Nordic Row Sampler.  All rows done so almost there!  Pieced with Aurifil 50 wt. on my BERNINA 780.
Starry Night… waiting for quilting. I’m thinking a feather border – do you agree?

Thanks for your patience on these – there was a delay in the fabric shipping for this collection which in turn delayed the patterns.  The good news is the next collection and pattern grouping will be right on time – I just can’t show it yet! Soon though – Spring Market is right around the corner and I’ll show some sneak peeks in my Facebook group before then. ( It coordinates with both Nordic Holiday and Sewing Room!)

Happy quilting!

Quilting Tips and Aurifil 2017 Block-of-the-Month Month 1

Posted on

Hi guys!  I hope you are having a wonderful start to your new year! Just three quick notes about new things that are happening at Amanda Murphy Design…

1) Today I’m over on Aurifil’s blog talking about how I quilt with their threads so be sure to check out my post for quilting tips and tricks!  I’m a huge fan of Aurifil threads and recently designed a whitework quilt featuring 28 spools of thread in Art and Stitch by modifying some of the motifs in my Sewing Room Quilting Collection, which is digitized for longarms but also for home embroidery machines.  (More on that soon…) I stitched it out on the BERNINA Q24 longarm using Q-Matic automation.  You can see pictures below…

2) Second… have you joined my Facebook group yet?  To be among the first to see my video quilting tutorials when I film them, please join us!

3) The Aurifil Block-of-the-Month is starting up!  (I’m Month 12 and my color is aqua so you can imagine how excited I am!)  To get directions to make the first month’s block, designed by Janet Clare, click here.   I made my own version in my Nordic Holiday collection for Contempo/Benartex (shipping this April), which you can see below.  I did a post for Aurifil awhile back talking about how I appliqué with their thread that you can reference here.  Many of you know that I like to use their heavyweight threads for appliqué, but for this month’s block I appliqués in 50 wt. thread in colors 2021 and 2065 because of the delicacy of the motif.  You can enter to win a 12 spool box of Aurifil thread each month simply by making the block and posting it at Pat Sloan’s website.

What would you like to see quilted? Plus new patterns!

Hi everyone! I hope you are having a happy holiday season! We just decorated our tree and our house is looking very “red and aqua”. Yay!  Kind of like this quilt from my first book Modern Holiday that just became a cover girl. It is part of a new book from C&T called “Use Your Yardage” with projects from a variety of authors.

I have five of these over in my shop so if you are interested check them out.

Also new to my shop is my Fall Market pattern “Northern Lights”.  This new one is a FAVORITE of mine and, if you are really fast, you might be able to stitch it up in time for Christmas – the design isn’t Christmas specific so can be kept out all winter long!  The pattern includes SVG files as well as traditional tracing diagrams and the fabric pictured is from my Nordic Holiday collection. The fabric won’t ship until spring but this pattern is available now.  If you love this collection please ask your local shop to order it.   I used 28wt. Aurifil thread from my Appliqué Collection for these pieces, using stitch #1329 on my BERNINA 780.  I then quilted it on my favorite BERNINA Q24.

Starstruck is also redone with a new cover – it was just perfect for winter so I couldn’t help myself!  This one is 2-1/2” strip friendly!  I’ve now stitched this one in both Feathers & Flourishes and Northern Holiday – it was so fun to quilt!

The two larger new patterns for this collection, Starry Night and Nordic Row Sampler, which you might have gotten  sneak peak of in my Fall Market 2016 post, will ship first quarter of the year. You I’m thinking of doing a quilt along with one or more of these Nordic Holiday patterns in my Facebook group this coming year. Are you in? I hope so.

Also in my Facebook group, I’m currently taking ideas from you all on what quilting motifs you would most like me to catch on video. I recently did feathers but there are a ton of different motifs out there and I plan to start doing more videos in the future. So please chime in and let me know what you’d like to learn how to quilt!

I hope you and your families are enjoying all the baking, making, and merriment the holidays bring.  Happy quilting!
